There are certain rumors that seem specifically designed to make the Internet explode. So specifically designed, in fact, that you find yourself not actually believing them, because of course casting directors wouldn’t be so obvious. The rumor that Tom Hiddleston might join Sherlock Season 4 as the third Holmes brother is one of those rumors.

The third Holmes brother, it should be noted, does not actually exist within the Arthur Conan Doyle Holmes canon — he was invented by Holmes scholar William S. Baring-Gould in his Sherlock Holmes “biography,” Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street: A Life of the World’s First Consulting Detective. There was, however, a small shout-out to this hypothetical brother in BBC Sherlock’s Season 3 finale, “His Last Vow,” when Mycroft is talking to Sherlock:
I’m not given to outbursts of brotherly compassion. You know what happened to the other one.
Given the information, Sherrinford Holmes— again, not a canonical name, but rather one generally accepted by pockets of the vast, historical Holmes fandom — is probably not in the best of shape if he is indeed a part of this particular iteration of Holmes. In fact, he sounds kind of dead.

But what if he’s not dead, and is indeed alive and destined to be played by British heartthrob Tom Hiddleston? Well, for one, Tumblr would have a fucking field day.

There are a few actors at work in terms of the believability of Hiddleston’s alleged casting in Sherlock. One is that Sherlock has never been a show particularly interested in raking in guest stars or utilizing stunt casting — and considering the massive overlap in Hiddleston’s fanbase and that of Sherlock, this could definitely fall into that category. In fact, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have long seemed much more interested in nepotistic casting — Benedict Cumberbatch’s parents, Martin Freeman’s longtime partner, Mark Gatiss’ partner, and Steven Moffat’s son have all appeared in onscreen roles on the show. This could work in Hiddleston’s favor, as he and Cumberbatch are friends (fun fact: Tumblr calls them Cuddles).

As for whether or not the third Holmes brother will appear at all in the show’s fourth season (or at all), all Steven Moffat said when asked about the mysterious Holmes was “wait and see!” In Moffat language that could just as easily mean “we have literally nothing planned, for ever” as it could “he’ll be a main character next season.”

I’d say the biggest thing working against this casting, though, is that this news is coming from almost no outlet other than Christian Today. Before that there was only one report that I could find saying Hiddleston would be joining the cast of Sherlock — as “Sherrinford” or as anyone — and it was from this past April.

It’s easy to imagine, in the incestuous world of British acting, that Hiddleston would join up with a heavily credentialed, breakout BBC show. And if it actually does happen, it will be undoubtedly glorious. But with things like this it’s fitting to ask: “Is this the sort of thing that seems so perfect it’s almost suspicious, as if someone made it up specifically to appeal to the tumblr audience?” As someone who spent much of the hiatus between seasons two and three fantasizing that they’d cast Hiddleston as Moran, I feel I have the authority to say that yes, this could easily be one of those times. I’ll trust it when and if it’s officially announced.

Mi piace dimenticare non tanto perché c’è ancora molto tempo tra adesso e quel momento, ma anche perché è più divertente quando è più fresca nella mente. Ma è comunque una ottima idea, ricordo quel dettaglio. Sto cercando solo di dimenticare così da non spifferare niente.

Non posso dirvi cosa stiamo preparando, ma non c’è nessuna programmazione dell’ultimo minuto in questo caso. Sapevamo quello che saremmo andati a fare con Moriarty ancora prima della seconda stagione. Esattamente quello che avremmo fatto. Ricordo di averne parlato con Andrew Scott, che interpreta Moriarty. Aspettate e vedrete quello che succederà.

Libri con Sherlock Holmes di altri autori

I romanzi e racconti "apocrifi" di Sherlock Holmes sono numerosissimi (troppi per poter essere riportati qui), specie dalla fine del 2000 quando i diritti d'autore sul personaggio sono scaduti almeno in Europa.

Uno tra i più noti libri di Sherlock Holmes non scritti da Doyle è il romanzo best seller di Nicholas Meyer La soluzione settepercento (The Seven Per Cent Solution, 1974), una storia in cui il detective si confronta con la sua dipendenza da cocaina con l'aiuto di Sigmund Freud. Da questo libro è stato tratto un film nel 1976, Sherlock Holmes: soluzione sette per cento (The Seven-Per-Cent Solution). Meyer ha scritto altri due romanzi holmesiani: The West End Horror (1976) e The Canary Trainer (1993).

Stephen King nel 1999 ha pubblicato il racconto Il caso del dottore, nella raccolta Incubi e deliri; Watson, quarant'anni dopo la morte del suo amico e ormai prossimo a "compiere un secolo", racconta di come forse un'unica volta sia riuscito a battere Holmes sul tempo nella soluzione di un caso.

Laurie King dal 1994 al 2000 ha scritto una serie di cinque romanzi ambientati negli anni venti nei quali la protagonista e narratrice è Mary Russel, giovane allieva e poi moglie del detective. In queste avventure compaiono tutti i personaggi principali di Conan Doyle, ai quali si aggiungono eventuali nuove leve: ad esempio il figlio dell'ispettore Lestrade, che ne ha preso il posto a Scotland Yard, o alcuni degli "irregolari di Baker Street" ormai ampiamente cresciuti. L'ambientazione dei nuovi casi spazia dalla brumosa Inghilterra all'estremo Oriente (L'allieva e l'apicultore e Il gioco) andando talvolta ad intersecarsi con la reinterpretazione dei personaggi di altri classici della letteratura, come Kim di Kipling.

Sherrinford Holmes is a hypothetical elder brother of Sherlock Holmes and Mycroft Holmes. His name is taken from early notes as one of those considered by Arthur Conan Doyle for his detective hero before settling on "Sherlock Holmes".

He was first proposed by William S. Baring-Gould who wrote in his biography "Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street" that Sherrinford was the eldest brother of Sherlock Holmes. Holmes once stated that his family were country squires, which means that the eldest brother would have to stay to manage the house. If Mycroft were the eldest then he couldn't play the role he does in four stories of the Sherlock Holmes canon, so Sherrinford frees them both. This position is strengthened by the fact that Mycroft's general position as a senior civil servant was a common choice among the younger sons of the gentry.

The character (as "Sherringford",) appears along with his brothers in the Virgin New Adventures Doctor Who novel All-Consuming Fire by Andy Lane, where he is revealed to be the member of a cult worshipping an alien telepathic slug that is mutating him and his followers into an insect-like form; the novel culminates with Holmes being forced to shoot his brother to save Watson.

He also appears, accused of a murder that Sherlock must find him innocent of, in the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game adventure The Yorkshire Horrors.
